Challenging Question
So I was foolish and waited till the end of July to buy my copy of Eclipse to read on the plane ride. The book already cost 15 dollars before tax. So now instead of charging me only the PST which was 8% tax, I now have to pay 13% tax. How much would I have saved by buying the book before July?

Fun Ideas

(Warning: 9 out of 10 physics students, including those here, will make this problem harder than it actually is)
Jack is paddling upstream. He passes two mile markers along the way. At the second marker, the water gets bumpy and his sunglasses are knocked off his head. He continues to paddle for ten minutes before noticing the glasses are gone. He paddles back down the river and fishes the glasses out of the water at the first marker. How fast is the current?

Assumptions given: Jack paddles at a constant speed. Jack's acceleration is instantaneous.

Balance
Use a balance with mystery weights on it to learn about balancing equations and isolating variables is invaluable as you can show them that you need to do the same thing to both sides. This strategy is particularly useful with the intermediate grades as they have just started developing their abstract thinking abilities.
